The Turbosmart TS-1-7170B-VR096E TS-1 7170 Kompact Turbocharger is built for serious high-horsepower applications where fast response, efficient airflow, and compact packaging are essential. This exact configuration combines a 71mm compressor inducer, 70mm turbine exducer, reverse-rotation design, 0.96 A/R turbine housing, 3-inch V-band turbine inlet and outlet, and external wastegate configuration. Turbosmart rates the TS-1 7170 for approximately 875–1,010 horsepower.
Turbosmart developed the TS-1 series around a "smaller, lighter and faster" philosophy, utilizing modern materials and advanced aerodynamics to reduce rotating mass while maintaining high-load performance. The proprietary dual ceramic bearing system works with an aggressive 7+7 2618 aluminum splitter-style compressor wheel to provide excellent transient response and strong performance at lower shaft speeds.
On the turbine side, the 7170 uses a lightweight 310S stainless-steel investment-cast turbine housing paired with a high-temperature 713C Inconel turbine wheel. CFD-developed housing geometry is engineered for optimized airflow and A/R characteristics, while each turbocharger is VSR speed-balanced for reliable operation at the extreme shaft speeds encountered in high-performance turbo systems.

Reverse-Rotation 7170 Kompact
- The TS-1-7170B-VR096E is specifically the reverse-rotation, 0.96 A/R V-band version of Turbosmart's TS-1 7170 Kompact. Turbosmart also offers a standard-rotation 0.96 A/R model and both standard- and reverse-rotation 1.07 A/R versions, so the complete part number is important when selecting the correct turbo for an existing manifold or custom fabrication project.
- Reverse rotation is particularly useful when building a mirrored twin-turbo system, allowing opposite-side turbochargers to be positioned more symmetrically. It can also provide packaging advantages in custom single-turbo installations where compressor outlet and inlet orientation are better suited to a reverse-rotation assembly.
0.96 A/R V-Band Turbine Housing
- This particular 7170 is equipped with a 0.96 A/R turbine housing, compared with the 1.07 A/R housing used on TS-1-7170B-VR107E. The smaller 0.96 A/R housing is generally the more response-oriented option of the two while still retaining the airflow capability of Turbosmart's 70mm turbine platform.
- Both the turbine inlet and outlet use 3-inch V-band connections, providing compact, secure connections for the exhaust manifold and downpipe. Turbosmart includes the corresponding weld flanges and V-band clamps with the turbocharger, simplifying fabrication of a properly designed custom turbo system.
TS-1 Oil-Cooled Architecture
- The TS-1 is Turbosmart's oil-cooled turbocharger platform. This is an important distinction from the TS-2 family, which incorporates both oil and water cooling. The TS-1 uses its proprietary bearing and main-shaft arrangement together with lightweight turbine and compressor components to minimize rotating mass and improve transient response.
- Turbosmart pairs this lightweight center section with aggressive compressor aerodynamics and a high-performance turbine system, targeting strong response without compromising airflow as engine load and exhaust flow increase.
Installation & Application
- The TS-1-7170B-VR096E is a universal performance turbocharger and is not intended as a vehicle-specific bolt-on replacement. Installation requires a properly fabricated 3-inch V-band exhaust manifold connection, appropriately sized external wastegate system, downpipe, charge piping, oil feed, and unrestricted oil drain.
- Because this model is externally wastegated, the wastegate is selected separately. Wastegate size and placement should be matched to engine displacement, exhaust flow, manifold design, intended boost level, and application.
