Hondata CANFlex provides an integrated flex-fuel solution that allows your FK8 Type R to operate on anything from conventional pump gasoline to ethanol-blended fuels and E85. The system continuously measures ethanol content and communicates that information to the ECU, allowing a compatible Hondata calibration to automatically compensate for the fuel mixture in the tank.
This means there's no need to drain the tank or manually switch between separate gasoline and ethanol calibrations every time the fuel mixture changes. Fill up with pump gas, add E85, or run a mixture of the two, and the CANFlex system provides the ECU with the ethanol-content information needed to adjust the calibration accordingly.

Performance Potential
One of the biggest advantages of CANFlex is the ability to take advantage of ethanol's increased knock resistance and cooling characteristics.
On a stock FK8 Civic Type R, Hondata reports that its CANFlex calibration can provide approximately 28 additional horsepower while also allowing the turbo to spool earlier and improving throttle response.
When CANFlex is combined with the Hondata Fuel System, Hondata reports gains of approximately 70–71 horsepower, with the turbo spooling roughly 200–400 RPM earlier on its tested configuration. Hondata's fuel-system CANFlex calibrations are conservatively set up around approximately 400 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque for a daily-driven application. Actual results will vary according to fuel blend, vehicle modifications, conditions, and calibration.
Pump Gas to E85 Flexibility
- With CANFlex installed and properly calibrated, your FK8 isn't restricted to one fixed ethanol percentage. Hondata states that the Type R can operate on anything from pump gasoline to E85, with the calibration responding to the detected ethanol concentration. Hondata also notes that additional performance is available around an E40–E50 blend, although that particular blend was not tested in the example referenced by Hondata.

FlashPro & ECU Jailbreak Required
- Hondata FlashPro is required and is sold separately. The CANFlex kit supplies the ethanol-sensing hardware but relies on a compatible FlashPro calibration to control the engine appropriately for changing ethanol content.
- The FK8 Civic Type R ECU must also be jailbroken before the CANFlex calibration can be installed. Hondata specifically states this requirement for the FK8 platform.
